Construction World February 2018ON THE COVER: We all know that Lithium-Ion cordless technology has taken our local market by storm over the last number of years. Makita has produced one of the world’s largest ranges of 18V power tools, and through its continuous research and development is constantly producing innovative new and exciting tools to enhance its range.

Makita’s latest offering are the twin battery tools powered by two 18V LXT batteries, installed in series to supply energy to the powerful 36V DC motor drive system. These tools offer great versatility, as they utilise your existing 18V battery and charger system. Not only do these tools compete head-to-head with their corded counterparts but are also a significantly affordable option than having to purchase a 36V tool and batteries.

Wind farm construction

Loeriesfontein Wind Farm and Khobab Wind Farm, in the Hantam Municipality of the Northern Cape, are two pioneering renewable energy projects in which Concor Infrastructure played an important and innovative role. The wind farms were constructed by Concor Infrastructure in a consortium with CONCO.

Concor Infrastructure was responsible for the construction of all 122 wind turbine generator foundations, as well as the adjoining hard stands and all internal roads on both sites.

The company brought its extensive experience and expertise in civil engineering, concrete design and sustainable project management to these construction projects in a remote endemically sensitive and arid location.

Projects and housing

The world’s fourth Radisson RED hotel is a vibrant addition to Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront with construction of the seven-storey building including one of Corobrik’s popular face brick range. The use of natural materials, such as Corobrik’s clay product, contributed towards the 5 Star Green Star rating awarded to the Radisson RED hotel building (Silo 6) – the first ever Green Star Custom Hotel rating for ‘new build’.

Pretoria-based Mellet & Human Architects is an award-winning practice which was founded in 2000 by André Mellet and Willem Human. In the intervening years, they have made a name for themselves by designing timeless projects, most notably in the upmarket residential sector.

The overarching definition used by Future Cape Town – a leading platform in Africa promoting democracy in the future of cities – is housing units that are affordable to a section of society whose income is below the neighbourhood’s median or average household income. “However,” says Future Cape Town Director, Rashiq Fataar, “affordable housing comprises various types of housing.”
