Construction World March 2018ON THE COVER: Ditshimega Projects and Training’s success in a difficult economic climate has been nothing less than astounding. When it was established in 2013 it had a turnover of R1,2-million. This has exploded to R250-million in 2017. Wilhelm du Plessis asked the MD, Sakkie Ranta about the company’s business model, its unique selling point and its preference for Scania vehicles in its quest to offer turnkey solutions to customers for the building of trusting relationships.

For a company wanting to maintain such a steep upward trajectory, it has to partner with the right partners. Ranta says that Ditshimega started their relationship with Scania in 2017. “I knew the OEM from seeing long-haul Scania vehicles and because I know they drive long distances, I knew they would be ideal for our footprint.”

Steel construction & roofing

The new Tugela River Pedestrian bridge opened to the public in June 2017 as the first steel pedestrian suspension bridge in the Mvumase, Maphumulo District, in Northern KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It is a landmark structure with an overall length of 180 m and towers that are nearly 27 m high, and forms part of the Pedestrian Bridge Programme, initiated by the Client, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport (KZNDoT). The Programme seeks to redress past imbalances to historically impoverished communities by implementing infrastructure which will improve the quality of life of these communities.

Talk about Light Steel Frame (LSF) building and what probably comes to mind for most readers are residential buildings, low-rise office blocks, fast-food outlets and other structures built by owners or developers that want energy-efficient, green, aesthetic buildings that can be built accurately and quickly.

Of late however, LSF roof structures that are hitting the headlines and two recent projects exemplify this trend.

Cape Town’s dire water crisis and the rapid approach of the much feared ‘Day Zero’ is shining a light on the role that corrugated, stainless steel water pipes can play in securing South Africa’s long-term municipal water supplies.

This is thanks to the introduction of a new SABS standard for these pipes after five years of research and writing and an additional one year of rigorous testing, driven largely by Sassda members Flexotube and Inox Systems

Architects Of Justice

On a challenging site, Architects Of Justice (AOJ) has created a geometrically striking industrial-chic office building which employs forthright sustainable design methodology and technology. In mid-2015 it was commissioned to design a new office building for Caldas Engineering, a supplier of crusher parts to the mining industry. As Caldas had expanded steadily over the years, their current premises in Meadowdale had become cramped and didn’t possess good views into the yard and over their stock, something which was imperative for a company which relies on the fact that they can dispatch stock quickly.

This project really was about creating something low maintenance which looked great, and at the same time, which operated on a sustainable level.
