Construction World June 2018ON THE COVER: Leading construction materials supplier, AfriSam, designed and supplied specialised readymix for the redevelopment of the 100 year old Grain Silo which now houses the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town.

AfriSam has been supplying materials for the construction of various prominent buildings at the V&A Waterfront for 25 years, and its sponsorship of the concrete for the Zeitz Museum further anchors them in the Western Cape where it is the biggest supplier of readymix and aggregate and the second biggest supplier of cement.

Roads & Bridges

The swift action taken by JG Afrika on behalf of the Bakwena Platinum Corridor Concessionaire to repair the damaged Groot Marico River Bridge on the N1/N4 prevented further damage to the toll-road and provided road users with a more convenient alternative to a 36 km detour while repairs were being undertaken to the structure.

Fibertex SA has appointed the Terrain Group as distributors for the company’s range of geosynthetic products in East Africa. “Through this distributorship agreement, the Terrain Group will supply Fibertex woven and nonwoven materials in Uganda, Kenya, South Sudan (GOSS) and Rwanda,” says Lionel Kistan, export manager, Fibertex SA.  

Work is in progress on what will be the world's biggest cable-stayed bridge, the Shanghai-Nantong Yangtze River Bridge. As well as the world's longest span (1 092 metres), it will also have the tallest pylons at 325 metres.

Design, engineering and consulting firm Arup, has been involved in some of the best-known sporting destinations from the Singapore Sports Hub, through to the Bird’s Nest Stadium and Water Cube in Beijing and many of the venues and long-terms plans for London 2012 and the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

The completion of the R360-million Admin Craft Basin (ACB) in the Port of Ngqura has opened up opportunities for revenue growth in this young developing port. The new structure will be home to the port’s three tugs and one pilot boat soon, freeing up Berth C101, which was designed to handle revenue generating vessels.

The Phumelela Local Municipality is currently experiencing severe water shortages. The high rural to urban migration and changing water use pattern places additional stress on existing infrastructure and resources. A programme is being implemented  to create a sustainable regional bulk water supply scheme in the Phumelela Local Municipal area, prioritising Warden.

Lifting solutions leader Johnson Crane Hire has assisted Guerrini Marine Construction (GMC) to successfully complete vital maintenance at Cape Town’s breakwater – considered one of the most essential aspects of the infrastructure for the Port of Cape Town and the popular V&A Waterfront.

uMhlanga’s most significant new commercial and retail development is just seven months away from opening. Construction on the R1-billion Park Square commenced in October 2016 and is due to open in November this year, according to Ken Reynolds, Director of Nedport Developments, the developers.
