Construction World July 2018ON THE COVER: At the African Construction & Totally Concrete Expo (TCE) in 2016, Scania South Africa partnered with bodybuilder Reimer on a joint stand, while in 2017 it partnered with Liebherr. In 2018 Scania decided to have its own stand to enable the brand to be the champion. This is symbolic of the growth of the Scania range of construction vehicles, now firmly entrenched in the South African construction world.

Project Focus

One hundred and eighty architects and built environment professionals gathered in Pretoria on 4 May 2018 for the prestigious Corobrik SAIA Institute of Architects (SAIA) Awards evening. Through this event, top architectural projects of recent times were recognised.

Five projects received Commendations. These projects met many of the criteria area worthy of further discussion and debate. A further twenty-four were presented with awards of merit. Six projects received Awards for Excellence, the highest distinction that SAIA can confer on a project in South Africa.

Projects & Contracts

Integrated infrastructure delivery firm AECOM is pioneering digital project delivery by adding various Immersive Technologies like Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) to its portfolio of existing 3D models produced by a Building Information Modelling (BIM) process.

This allows both the design teams and clients to ‘walk through’ VR scenes of an actual project, whether an industrial process plant such as a brewery or an automotive assembly plant, as well as commercial projects, Craig Howie, BIM Manager, Buildings + Places, explains.

Concor Buildings is synonymous with delivering fast track projects to the desired quality, on time and most importantly within budget.

Martin Muller, contracts manager at Concor Buildings, ascribes this characteristic as one of the reasons why the company secured the contract to construct the new student housing accommodation in Streatley Avenue, Auckland Park.

Being developed by Century Property Developments, The Campus, when completed at the end of 2018, will provide accommodation for 800 students predominantly from Wits and UJ. This will mitigate some of the shortages being experienced with student accommodation close to the tertiary education institutions.

Property development and nature might not automatically go hand in hand, but more and more developers are moving towards incorporating nature into building design.

In South Africa, Johannesburg has long been considered the world’s largest man-made urban forest – boasting more than 6 million trees. And Cape Town’s CBD is set to change with the arrival of its first environmentally-friendly mixed-use development: Harbour Arch. Perhaps surprisingly, one of the most eye-catching features of this 5,8-hectare mixed-use precinct will be the complex’s green rooftop towering over the city’s harbour.

 Project Development & Management

The cost of global construction is set to rise by 4,3 percent during 2018 compared to 4,1 percent in 2017, as developers face the challenge of continued shortages of relevant skills to deliver an increasing number of projects, according to new research from global professional services firm Turner & Townsend.

Integrated infrastructure development company AECOM had a major presence at the 38th annual conference of the International Association for Impact Assessment, IAIA18, held from 16 to 19 May at the Durban International Convention Centre.

Construction and technology law firm and construction adjudication experts, MDA Attorneys has reported an increase of 65% in the number of adjudications in the South Africa construction industry in 2017 compared to the previous year.
