Painting metal surfaces is a challenge for even the most seasoned professional, and knowing which type of metal you're working with is vital, since it will influence the performance characteristics of any coatings needed. When it comes to ferrous metal, corrosion protection is essential.

Fast drying corrosion protectionIn some instances, speed is of the essence, and fast drying coatings are necessary. When applying coatings in unsheltered areas where wind, weather, and bugs are a concern, the dry time becomes extremely important. Cortec Corporation, a global leader in corrosion protection solutions, is now offering a fast drying, solvent based alkyd topcoat that helps to quickly protect metal.

Cortec's VpCI-280 fast drying topcoat was developed as a versatile, industrial finishing enamel for manufacturers of metal products, and has excellent UV resistance, which allows for great colour and gloss retention. The product can be matched to most custom colours.

Ideal for industrial OEM uses, including agricultural and construction equipment, VpCI-280 uses Cortec's patented Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibiting (VpCI) Technology. This offers an environmentally safe, cost-effective option for corrosion protection, using very low levels of VOC and Hazardous Air Pollutant Solvents.

Cortec products use a thin, monomolecular protective barrier which re-heals and self-replenishes, and can be combined with other functional properties for added protective capabilities. VpCI forms a physical bond on the metal surface creating a barrier layer against aggressive ions.

Corrosion takes place because of the minute differences in electrical potential between small areas on the metal surface which become anodic (a positive charge) and cathodic (a negative charge). When an electrolyte – that is, a conductor of electrical charges — connects anodes to cathodes, a corrosion cell is created. Moisture on the metal surface is the most common electrolyte. In the electrolyte, a small electrical current begins to flow. The iron ions produced at the anode combine with the environment to form loose, flaky iron oxide – more commonly known as rust.

The surface expectancy of a coating is primarily dependent upon good surface preparation. The surface to be coated should be free of mill scale, rust, oil, and other contaminates including salt deposits. The Cortec enamel may be applied over steel and other properly prepared substrates. It may be used for one-coat, direct to metal applications; however, a primer is required for long-term corrosion protection.

This one coat system can be applied direct to metal and provides protection in harsh, outdoor, unsheltered applications. The complex mixture of non-toxic, organic inhibitors offers protection that competes with most paints and zinc-rich primers.
