The eThekwini Municipality was recently awarded the highly commended award in the category of technical excellence at the South African Institution of Civil Engineering (SAICE) regional awards. The commendation came for the M25/Bhejane Road Underpass Interchange in KwaMashu, which forms part of the C9 route of GO!Durban, the City’s new integrated rapid public transport network currently under construction.

Massive construction projects underway in Durban.jpbThis interchange provides a link into the Inanda, Ntuzuma and KwaMashu (INK) neighbourhoods. eThekwini Municipality Mayor Cllr Zandile Gumede says that accessibility into INK, as well as neighbouring Phoenix, is key to economic growth and development. The first GO!Durbant route is expected to be operational in 2018 and will deliver more than 100 000 people daily into the Bridge City bus terminus and train station when fully operational.

Durban is currently busy with a number of other large construction projects, including the 88-storey Durban Iconic Tower. The R7.3-billion mixed-use project will be situated on the Durban Country Club and will include a retail mall, commercial office space, apartments, sporting facilities, a museum, as well as 4-star and 6-star hotels. The tower component of the development will also have a Michelin star restaurant with a public viewing deck at the top.

Similarly, the R3.1-billion Oceans Umhlanga ‘Dubai-style’ mixed-use development will boast two residential towers consisting of 460 apartments with sea views. The development will also boast a shopping mall and a luxury 200-room five-star hotel. This is the largest private sector investment in development history in KwaZulu-Natal.

The mixed-use Park Square office and retail development in uMhlanga, worth R1-billion, will have a 4-Star Green Star design, while the new 1 000 hectre mixed used Sibaya Coastal Precinct development will see a total of 60% of the landscape beiong rehabilitated and left as ‘green spaces’. This development, extending from the Ohlanga River in the south, the Mdloti River in the north and the N2 highway in the west, will provide over 9 000 residential dwellings and 500 000 square metres of commercial properties such as schools and hospitals.
