The second Africa Innovation Summit (AIS II) has been announced. The Summit will take place from 6 to 8 June 2018 at the Kigali Convention Center in Kigali, Rwanda.

Second Africa Innovation Summit announcedThe AIS seeks “innovative and disruptive solutions” for major challenges facing African countries, such as energy access, water, food insecurity, and health systems. The AIS is an initiative that aims to “mobilise the people and, especially those with the ‘power to act’, including investors, the people with the ideas, the policy makers, the researchers and academics, the business community, the youth, as well as innovators and thinkers” into a coalition for collective action to promote and build an enabling environment for innovation in Africa. The goal is to engage as many people as possible in order to build a broad constituency in support of innovation in Africa.

AIS II will be a three-day event and the programme will include a set of plenary sessions on major thematic issues, over twenty facilitated workshops in focused workgroups, as well as many side events and special programmes.

The Summit will also include satellite events in three to five locations across Africa, an exhibition by 50 African SMEs and institutions with scalable innovative ideas, products and/or services, and a Youth Innovation Challenge. The event will also include hackathons and blogs to mobilise practical popular engagement, and will produce policy briefs and a book with case studies after its conclusion.

“AIS is not another event but the continental platform aimed at building the ecosystem for innovation in Africa in order to ensure Africa’s structural transformation,” says Dr. Olugbenga Adesida, Director of AIS.

“As a platform for multi-stakeholder dialogue and actions, AIS II will bring together participants with the power to act, from all parts of the continent and elsewhere, including heads of states and governments, ministers and other government officials, heads of the regional and continental organisations, CEOs of established firms, founders of start-ups, investors, academics, researchers, policy, science and technology experts, business angels, innovators as well as major thinkers with the aim of seeking solutions to challenges and mobilising for collective actions.”

Jean Philbert Nsengimana, Minister of Youth and ICT for Rwanda, has called for wide participation in the Summit. “Join the movement to facilitate change in Africa from within. On behalf of the Government of Rwanda, we are delighted to welcome AIS delegates to Kigali for the continental event on innovation focused on finding answers to some of the perennial challenges facing our continent.”
