The Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has completed the rehabilitation of Port Nolloth’s infrastructure. The project, valued at R39 million, is part of a longer-term plan to develop Port Nolloth into a port that offers “greater economic opportunities for the people of the area”, according to Port of Cape Town port manager Mpumi Dweba-Kwetana.

Port Nolloth25% of the contract value went back into local companies, predominantly black-, women- and youth-owned businesses. Since August 2016, the port has seen refurbishment of the jetty structure, quay infrastructure, refurbishment or replacement of concrete where required, replacement of quayside fender systems and revetment works to address erosion of the shore line. Many of these works were conducted by the local companies.

The port’s infrastructure comprises an L-shaped concrete deck on pile jetty with a 67m landing quay and a useable area of 1 450m2. It is primarily used as an offshore supply base for diamond prospecting activity in Namibia by De Beers, and is one of six development nodes identified by government to be developed over time into a sustainable coastal and marine tourism destination under Operation Phakisa, which aims to fast-track and unlock investments across South Africa’s maritime sector.

The TNPA is making progress in its efforts to introduce new and modern cruise terminals with safe, reliable and efficient marine services, says TNPA CEO Shulami Qalinge. “World-class cruise facilities in our ports will continue to attract global operators, which has economic spinoffs for tour operators, hotels, game reserves, lodges and tourist attractions in our port cities.”

More than 20 luxury cruise ships operated by 17 international cruise lines will call at South Africa’s ports during the 2017/18 cruise season, he adds. “As the South African Ports Authority we have positioned Durban and Cape Town as stimulus cruise home ports, while Richards Bay, Mossel Bay, Port Elizabeth and East London continue to receive their share of cruise ships.”

In line with this, a terminal operator agreement with Kwa Zulu Cruise Terminal is shortly to be completed. This will entail the design, financing, construction, operation, maintenance and transfer of a new cruise terminal facility at the Port of Durban for a 25-year concession period.

Similarly, the TNPA granted V&A Waterfront a concession for the operation and maintenance of the Cape Town passenger terminal for 20 years in 2015. Following the 20 year period, ownership will be handed back to the TNPA, which has a three-phase growth plan in place for the facility.
