Change is the only constant – and companies have to be agile to adapt to the ever-changing publishing climate. Nowhere is this more evident than in the field of business-to-business publishing, which is influenced directly by how the industry it serves is faring. During 2017, apart from an already volatile global economic climate, industry was often negatively impacted by political decisions, especially in the industry that Crown Publications serves: mining, construction, capital equipment, mechanical and chemical engineering and electricity.

Crown staff December 2018

Crown Publications celebrated the end of 2017 at its recent year end staff party. Seen here are some staff members (from left): Munesu Shoko (editor CEN), Stephanie Glossotis (debtors), Karen Grant (publisher), Anoonashe Shumba (graphic designer), Ian Jandrell (technical director); and Wilhelm du Plessis (deputy publisher).

Notwithstanding the difficult climate, Crown Publications managed to maintain and grow some of its titles. It is a publisher with a 30-plus year track record and publishes six monthly and three quarterly magazines.

In addition to economic complexities, business-to-business publishers have until recently largely been protected from the ‘online onslaught’ because of the nature of their content, which favoured print. This is increasingly less so and innovative ways have to be found not only to engage the existing target audience, but also to provide new entrants into the industry with quality content in the format they favour. This also means that conventional ways of distributing magazines has to be tailored.

Crown Publications has been able to navigate the rather muddy waters of what this all means. The company significantly grew its digital offering with fully fledged websites for all the titles, electronic newsletters, videos that support editorial, and the active sharing of such content with the relevant industries through LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook. In the process it is reinvigorating the somewhat out-of-date model of what business-to-business publishing used to be and successfully creating multiple platforms for advertising and editorial to reach target audiences – digital and print.

Crown Publications thanks all our advertisers, industry clients, content providers and staff who are on this steep upward curve into uncharted territory with us, and wishes them a peaceful holiday.
