Veolia Water Technologies South Africa has inaugurated its new chemical blending facility in Pomona, Kempton Park. The 6 600 m2 plant is the main blending facility for the company’s local operations and will be responsible for exports into Africa.

Veolia SA inaugurates new chemical plant1This state-of-the-art plant has a maximum ouput capacity of 15,000 tons of water treatment chemicals per year and implements best-in-class practices, including recycling 100% of its wastewater and reducing the consumption of potable water through the recycling of wash water. The facility produces more than 40 chemicals as part of the company’s global Hydrex range of water chemicals, including water and wastewater treatment chemicals, boiler and cooling tower chemicals, flocculant chemicals and reverse osmosis membrane cleaning chemicals, as well as specially blended chemicals for specific applications.

The factory, which currently employs 40 people, produces 500t a month of water treatment chemicals. Production could be increased to 1 500t a month if the plant implemented three eight-hour shifts, up from the single shift it currently operates.

Veolia SA inaugurates new chemical plant2Veolia’s factory has an in-house laboratory for testing and verification. Testing and quality assurance procedures conform to the International Standards Organisation standards, as well as local standards. It also holds three different food and beverage chemicals certifications: The South African Bureau of Standards 1827, 1828 and 1853 standards.

As a result of the improved capacity of the new plant, Veolia is distributing its products all over Africa. The company has already produced a shipment of chemicals for use in Morocco, and there is a future opportunity to export to Brazil. Other recent African installations by Veolia include a three-part project for Shanta Gold at its New Luika Gold Mine located in the Lupa Goldfield, south west Tanzania, where Veolia Water Technologies has supplied a River Water Treatment Package Plant, a Borehole Water Treatment Plant and a Sewage Treatment Plant. The company also supplied two packaged water treatment plants to Bambisana Hospital in the Eastern Cape to provide potable water to the hospital as well as to treat its sewage water for reuse.

The new production facility complements Veolia’s Engineered Systems facility in Sebenza, where the company’s range of prefabricated packaged plants are built. This includes several key offerings of the Standard Products portfolio for particular market segments in Africa. The Standard Products portfolio incorporates a range of packaged solutions of specific, adapted products and solutions drawn from over 350 proprietary Veolia technologies.
