In the world of shopping centre and retail design, finding the fine lines between architecture, interior design, graphic design, marketing, advertising, and ergonomics, and bringing them together, is essential to creating spaces that consumers will enjoy. Chief Executive Officer for the South African Council of Shopping Centres (SACSC) Amanda Stops says that shopping centres and retailers have become more dynamic over recent years, and that South Africa remains world class in terms of the types of centres and stores that have been designed and produced.

Retail Design and Development Awards continue to showcase excellence1“Judging the Retail, Design and Development Awards (RDDA) has become progressively more difficult as we see even more innovation over the years, and this year was no exception. I would like to congratulate all the entrants in this year’s RDDAs,” she says.

The 2018 RDDA winners were announced on the opening day of the SACSC Annual Congress, held at Durban’s International Convention Centre. Winning entries were picked based on their display of “seamless harmony of design excellence, innovation and environmental consciousness”. This includes in-store design, centre redevelopments, expansions of existing shopping centres and development of new centres.

Sponsored by Nedbank CIB Property Finance, the 2018 RDDAs saw the Whale Coast Mall standing out from the rest of the winners, and was given the Spectrum Award. The Spectrum Award celebrates retail excellence across all disciplines and sectors. It is a platform for recognising innovation, outstanding economic and creative achievements. This award is selected from all the Retail Design and Development Award winners.

Retail Design and Development Awards continue to showcase excellence2Stops says entrants in the various categories created a huge challenge for the judging panel in this year’s intake as they were all exceptionally designed and presented. Andrew Ogg, SACSC RDDA Chairman also says he was impressed by the entries this year.

“On behalf of the jury I would like to congratulate this year’s winners. We were all again impressed at the breadth and quality of the entries. The jury were delighted to note that all this year’s winners were in small and medium sized locations, underlining that exemplary design is not exclusive to larger regional locations with higher budgets,” he adds.

Whale Coast Mall Won the Spectrum Award for architect Bentel Associates International/JLD and developer Dorpstraat, as well as taking the prize in the New Developments category. The winning entry in the Renovation/Expansion category was Boat Shed, which was designed by architect Leon Saven Design and the developer was the V&A Waterfront. The Retail Design – Store winner was Relay Denim Bar Braamfontein, designed by Design Partnership and owned by TFG. The Retail Design – Restaurant category was won by Nando’s Horizonview, which was designed by Design Partnership and is owned by Nando’s Group Holdings.
