Arrow Electronics and nonprofit organisation We Care Solar have won the 2019 Edison Award for Social Innovation for their joint development of the Solar Suitcase 3.0. The Solar Suitcase 3.0. is a portable and durable power system that provides sustainable energy for around-the-clock, effective obstetric care in remote and off-grid maternal health facilities.

Obstetric solar solution wins award for innovation

A sun-powered, waterproof, compact system that includes medical-quality lighting, a foetal monitor, rechargeable headlamps, and cell phone charging for remote health workers, the Solar Suitcase is expected to work for at least five years before requiring a simple battery replacement. The power system is currently being field tested in Uganda, with larger scale manufacturing in the United States planned this year.

The Solar Suitcase won the Humanitarian Technology category of the Edison Awards. The awards, in their 32nd year, recognise and honour the world’s best innovators and innovations.

All nominations were reviewed by the Edison Awards Steering Committee and the final ballot was sent to an independent judging panel. The judging panel was comprised of more than 3000 professionals from the fields of product development, design, engineering, science, marketing and education, and included professional organisations representing a wide variety of industries and disciplines.

The Solar Suitcase was designed by We Care Solar, and Arrow Electronics helped create a lower cost, more powerful design that is easier to manufacture at scale, install and operate.
