New smart-compaction technology released by equipment manufacturer, Ammann, is speeding up construction and changing the way engineers specify the compaction of roads and other structures.
The new Smart-Compaction technology allows operators to ‘dial-in’ required compaction levels and use the machines unique amplitude and frequency settings to provide the right compaction levels in the most efficient manner possible.
Thanks to the advanced mechanics of Ammann’s new AcePro series compactors, the drum can be to be oscillated or vibrated with precisely enough vibrations per second and oscillation force to correctly compact the substrate beneath to an exact and predetermined depth. Simultaneously, sensors and onboard software can provide real-time read-outs of the compaction level being achieved.
According to Craig Sheppard, national product manager for ELB Equipment, the local distributor of Ammann compaction equipment, the Ammann AcePro series compactors are unique in their ability to automatically measure and adjust to underfoot conditions in order to achieve the desired compaction.
“The frequency can be set to a high of more than 40 vibrations (up/down cycles) per second and amplitude that can have large movement of up to 3,8 mm between cycles. This allows a big throw to be used very slowly for soft conditions or high frequency at a low amplitude for hard ground,” says Sheppard.
“Through the onboard sensors and computer systems the machine can even produce a test strip to identify soil conditions. For engineers this takes the guess work out of compaction, rather than running too many passes they will be able to get it exactly right the first time – with the least possible passes.”
Another major factor is the avoidance of over compaction in which aggregates separate and the entire compaction area damaged to the extent that it needs to be ripped up and rebuilt again. “This means that the AcePro not only reduces costs in diesel and time-on-site, but it also cuts out costly mistakes,” explains Sheppard.
This, combined with the ability to provide technically correct compaction based on materials and the ability to display areas that cannot be compacted (hidden rocks, culverts) has made it a firm favourite of road engineers across the globe. Locally, the South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) has also recently brought about strict new specifications that call for the kind of smart compaction technology that only Ammann compactors can achieve in this country.
“This is proof that Smart Compaction is the way of the future. Contractors using Ammann AcePro Smart Compaction have the edge over others as they will work faster, more efficiently and can prove their compaction results like no others can,” concludes Sheppard.
