The judging for Construction World’s annual Best Projects Awards took place on 5 October in Johannesburg. Almost 60 projects competed in the seven categories of the only award in South Africa that recognises excellence across the entire construction world.
It celebrates excellence among civil and building contractors, specialist contractors and suppliers and professional service providers, while this award was also one of the first in the country to recognise innovation in sustainable construction. AfriSam, the main sponsor, also sponsors the ‘AfriSam innovation award for sustainable construction’.
The judges – Trueman Goba, Rob Newberry and Nico Maas – represent various bodies in the construction industry: ECSA, CIOB and the MBA. They were of the opinion that the entries illustrate the breadth of innovation and excellence in the industry – despite difficult times. They maintained that it showcases projects even built environment professionals were often not aware of.
The ‘specialist contractor or supplier’ category attracted 24 entries – the most of the all the categories. This is indicative, says Nico Maas that such subcontractors are responsible for “up to 80% of all project execution” as big construction companies outsource these functions and become more like project managers.
Winners will be announced at an event on 9 November in Johannesburg.
