Today sees the launch of Women in Electricity (WIE) in the Western Cape and it goes with the hash tag #Re-Energise Women in Electricity through Empowerment.
Chairperson of WIE, Refilwe Mokgosi (seen below) explains that Women in Electricity is a pragmatic programme which is designed to create an enabling environment for women to participate in the electricity industry.
“The WIE programme is structured to nurture and retain female talent within the industry, in order to capacitate them to progress with the right competencies in the industry,” says Mokgosi. “Most importantly, it is to ensure that South Africa develops a rich pool of skilled women to tackle current and future challenges in the energy sphere.”
WIE was mandated by the executive council of AMEU to accelerate gender transformation in the industry; create tangible programmes that are designed to groom women in the electricity sector; and to maximise the positive contribution that woman can make in the industry
The WIE pillars are:
· Mentorship and leadership development.
· Partnerships and networking.
· International exchange programme.
