Two cable thieves have each been sentenced to three years in prison. The pair had been convicted of stealing an underground cable at the Kaalfontein College substation in Midrand in January this year.

South Africa clamps down on cable thievesEskom's Khulu Phasiwe said: “Although it’s three years, we’re happy the law has tightened around such incidents and, hopefully, this will send a clear message to others that they too can face similar or even harsher sentences. We are now hoping that law enforcement agencies are starting to take this matter very seriously. This follows the formalisation, two or three years ago, of the law which plans to punish people severely for stealing cables."

In April, City of Tshwane Mayor, Solly Msimanga said that there have been more than a thousand incidents of cable theft in the city since November last year. Delivering his state of the capital address‚ Msimanga said that while the capital is not a producer of copper‚ it seems to be the largest marketplace for the trade in copper.

“The incidents of cable theft are shocking‚ to say the least. From November 2017 to date‚ the city has experienced at least 1 498 instances of cable theft and vandalism‚” he said.

Another big challenge was that cable theft led to power outages and cost the city a lot of money to replace stolen infrastructure. “It is because of all these power outages owing to cable theft that I will be meeting with the executive mayor of Johannesburg as well as the executive mayor of Ekurhuleni so that we may find a coordinated manner in which to deal with the scourge of cable theft that has befallen our metro municipalities‚” he said.

Cable theft costs the country billions of rands each year, affecting essential services and, in some cases, bringing the country to a halt. The estimated loss due to copper theft is approximately R5 billion per year.
