Modern Mining: Featured News

Barloworld Equipment has delivered three of the first Cat AD22 articulated underground trucks in Africa to Glencore’s Mopani Copper Mines in Kitwe, Zambia. At 22-tonne capacity, the AD22 has the distinction of being Caterpillar’s smallest articulated dump truck. The AD22 model was developed in response to global demand for a robust, dependable truck capable of manoeuvring in smaller underground areas.

This addition to Caterpillar’s hard rock mining product line was launched at MINExpo 2016 in Las Vegas and released commercially to market this year.

Hilton Raven, mining sales consultant at Barloworld Equipment Zambia, says three AD22 trucks were delivered to Mopani Copper Mines in Zambia on 25 and 26 July 2017. Two of the units went to Mopani’s Nkana Mine Site and one to the Mufulira Mine Site.

“The mine required this size for its smaller operations and development works that require trucks with 3.5x3.5 haulage sizes,” says Raven. “The AD22, like Caterpillar’s other underground trucks, is considered more robust than competing machines, with much higher ground clearance and easier operation, maintenance and repair.”

Such is the need for this size Cat machine that negotiations are under way to add several more Cat AD22s to the Mopani Copper Mines fleet.

Best features built in

“The new AD22 articulated truck responds to demand by underground operations like Mopani for a truck suitable for smaller applications than the proven 30-tonne Cat AD30,” says Paul Brandrick, underground product manager at Barloworld Equipment.

“The AD30 was launched in 2002 and operates on many Southern African mines including Platinum Goup Metals’ Maseve mine, Hebei Iron’s PMC, South 32’s Wessels, Assmang’s Black Rock, and Rosh Pinah in Namibia, owned by Trevali.”

The AD22 delivers industry leading performance as well as competitive pricing in its size class. It is designed and built on the success of its larger truck product family, with intelligent and robust features that deliver similar cycle times and durability.

Its small operating footprint and agile characteristics, including an acute articulation angle and decreased outside turning radius, make this a versatile machine that manoeuvres easily through the rugged environment of underground mining spaces.

The AD22 offers a three-pass match to the Cat R1300G underground mining loader or a two-pass match to the R1600H. A wide body design makes loading faster and easier. Multiple dump body sizes are available to optimise the truck for all mining applications. Dump and ejector options are also offered.

The new truck is available with an open operator compartment or an optional enclosed cab, both are ROPS (roll over protection structure) and FOPS (falling objects protection structure) certified.

Other benefits include ground level servicing and major component commonality with other Cat products for good parts availability and reduced inventory costs.

Engine

The AD22’s C11 ACERT™ diesel engine is known for reliability, performance and exceptional service life. The C11 delivers gross power of 242 kW at 1 800 rpm with a high torque output, allowing the truck to haul maximum rated payload efficiently on incline or decline haulage.

A closed circuit variable hydraulic demand fan helps to increase production and fuel economy as well as reducing fan noise and engine overcooling. The demand fan operates to match the ambient conditions. In cooler environments or work load, the fan turns at a slower speed. It consumes only the power required to cool the truck systems, providing more power to help lower the cost per unit of material moved.

Power train

Full electronic clutch pressure control ensures smooth shifting and directional changes, while shift torque management helps to smooth gear changes so that the operator can focus on the task at hand.

Operator station

Caterpillar’s ergonomic operator station designs incorporate controls and instrumentation that are continuously refined to help operators perform efficiently. The AD22 has a new full colour display located at the front of the right-hand console that enables the operator to monitor both machine performance and machine parameters in any given task.

The information display screen is large and quick to respond, with an intuitive menu structure. Machine instrumentation, warnings and optional reverse camera are displayed in one central location via the LCD screen.

A sweeping deck design provides good sight lines around the front of the truck for safe movement in tight spaces.

The optional sound-suppressed enclosed ROPS cab provides a quiet, secure and comfortable air-conditioned working environment.

Structures

The frame incorporates a box-section design with wide and stiff frame beams to handle torque loads. The frame design decreases stress in the hitch area and optimises suspension geometry. Materials and weld joints are matched for longer life.

The articulating hitch provides the truck with steering articulation and the oscillation ensures that it maintains all wheel ground contact in rough terrain. Hardened steel pins, taper roller bearings and oscillating stops allow the rear frame to move independently from the front frame.

Safety

Standard heavy duty guard rails are designed to safeguard the operator and maintenance team while working on the machine.

Ground level service access points around the machine provide easy and safe access to the engine lockout and shutdown switches, battery disconnect switch, transmission oil filler and dip stick, transmission oil filter, fuel filters, fuel priming pump, engine oil filler and dip stick, engine oil filter and coolant level sight glass.

An operator presence system automatically engages the parking brake, neutralises steering, implement and transmission control, and shuts down the engine if the operator fails to apply the park brake prior to exiting the cab.
