Modern Mining: Featured News

Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) has launched its new range of Volvo-branded rigid haulers at the company’s Motherwell facility in Scotland. Around 160 customers and dealers from around the world, as well as a small media contingent which included Modern Mining’s Arthur Tassell, attended the event.

Guests got their first glimpse of the new machines – the 45-ton R45D, 60-ton R60D, 72-ton R70D and the flagship 100-ton (95-tonne) R100E – on Tuesday April 10th. The star of the show was undoubtedly the R100E, a completely new rigid hauler that – says Volvo CE – combines a wealth of market and customer knowledge with proven components, new technologies and a striking new design.

Customers and dealers inspect the R100E.

As well as having the chance to inspect the new range of machines, guests at the launch event – which was held over three days – also got the opportunity to test drive the flagship R100E, see how the rigid haulers are designed and manufactured and watch them in action at a nearby quarry.

The Volvo CE rigid hauler range is available in Southern African through Volvo CE’s dealer, Babcock, with the first machines expected in South Africa by the end of the year.  Representing Babcock at the launch were Roger O’Callaghan, CEO – Africa, David Vaughan, MD of Babcock’s Equipment business, and Lance Mannix, Regional Manager, Northern Region.

The R100E will be competing in one of the most contested segments of the rigid hauler market but Volvo CE is confident that it will soon attract a strong following. Built to perform, it is powered by a premium 783 kW Cummins QST30-Tier2 industry-proven engine. The combined drivetrain delivers high torque capabilities, excellent pulling performance and class-leading rimpull for optimum traction. Drivetrain control is supplied by the new Volvo Dynamic Shift Control, which automatically tailors the transmission shift-points depending on the worksite and operational inputs.

The R100E is built for all surface mining and quarrying applications, where operational costs are critical. Customers can expect to spend less per haul with the R100E, which features a 60,4 m3 capacity V-shaped body for optimum load retention and minimal material carry-back.

The On-Board Weighing (OBW) option is an integrated system that ensures the machine moves the optimum safe payload to further optimise production and minimise operational costs. It does this by using exterior-mounted pressure sensors to monitor and relay machine statistics to the operator’s on-board display. Not only can machine information be viewed in real-time via the on-board display, it can be remotely accessed via Volvo’s telematics system to help operators and fleet managers improve planning.

Uptime and productivity are centred on the machine’s durable design, which promotes high component protection and longer lifecycles for extended intervals between planned maintenance.

The robust hauler offers a low centre of gravity and is equipped with an expertly designed body and chassis that work in harmony with the McPherson strut with lower wishbone front suspension and the new low-effort steering system.

The front suspension is widely spaced to absorb load and ground surface shocks and protect vital machine structures. Detailed engineering is also evident in the machine frame ‘horse collar’ design, providing flexibility to travel on uneven terrain. Manufactured from box-section steer rails, the frame features high-strength steel castings in the key stress locations to absorb ground impacts. All frame bores are sleeved for additional protection. A significant investment was spent in frame and body rigorous testing, which included applying 60 000 hours’ worth of chassis fatigue loads.

Not only a highly efficient machine, the R100E also brings operator productivity to the fore – starting with the ROPS/FOPS-certified operator cab. Offering reduced vibrations and exterior noise, the cab is fitted onto viscous-type isolation mounts for greater ride quality.

From the operator seat, located on the left side of the cab, the operator can observe the job site and surrounding areas through the large glass area and a low rake windscreen. Good visibility is complemented by a 360 deg surround view system provided by Volvo Smart View. The system uses multiple ultra-wide-angle exterior-mounted cameras to produce a bird’s-eye-view of the vehicle and surrounding work area via the on-board display.

The R100E makes daily service checks and routine maintenance quick and easy with anti-slip steps and secure walkways. All service points are strategically grouped and located within reach from the ground and service platform to provide quick, easy and safe machine maintenance or adjustments, while the direct rim-mounted wheel design promotes safe and quick installation and removal.

The R100E also offers a high level of hydraulic filtration that features magnetic suction filters on each hydraulic functional system, as well as pressure filtration on the steering, brake actuation pump and rear brake cooling units.

The R100E has undergone extensive field testing at mining sites in both Sweden and South Africa, carefully selected to test the machine in both cold and hot climates and in hard rock and coal. The R100E under test in South Africa has been – and continues to be – operated by mining contractor Trollope Mining Services at Manungu Colliery in the Witbank coalfield.

“The Volvo R100E is an impressive design that offers a good balance between productivity, fuel efficiency, comfort, ease of maintenance and safety,” says Sagrys De Villiers, Trollope’s Site Manager. “We are sure that this truck will be a strong competitor in the rigid truck market in the future.”

“The R100E is capable of carrying an extra bucket pass compared to other 100-ton trucks being used on the site,” notes Workshop Manager Danie van Niekerk. “This means extra productivity for the mine, which is very valuable. Speed and acceleration of the hauler on inclines compares favourably against competitor machines, even when fully loaded and carrying more material.”

While the R100E is an entirely new design, its three D-Series siblings – the R45D, R60D and R70D – are based on the existing and well-proven Terex Trucks TR-Series haulers, which have now been discontinued (although they will continue to receive full support from Volvo CE and its dealers). Development of the D-Series haulers follows an in-depth engineering review, ensuring that the machines meet the standards expected from Volvo products in their target markets and segments. Improvements include greater visibility and enhanced safety systems, along with Volvo technical support and branding.

“It was great to invite customers and dealers to the site where the new Volvo-branded rigid haulers are being manufactured,” says Thomas Bitter, Senior Vice President of the Marketing and Product Portfolio (MaPP) function at Volvo CE. “We’ve been working on the new range since Volvo CE acquired Terex Trucks in 2014. The development of these machines has relied heavily on the long-standing rigid hauler expertise of Terex Trucks as well as customer input and the technological strength of the Volvo Group.”

“The proven design of the Terex Trucks rigid haulers provided us with a strong DNA on which to develop Volvo CE’s innovative entry into this product line,” agrees Paul Douglas, Volvo CE’s Vice President of Rigid Haulers and Managing Director of Terex Trucks. “The R100E has been designed to meet customer demands for a rigid hauler that delivers high performance and productivity, low total cost of ownership, easy serviceability and good operator comfort. It, along with the rest of the range, builds on Terex Trucks’ 84-year heritage and incorporates the customer feedback and market knowledge we have built-up over the years.”
