Modern Mining September 2017Our lead article in this issue covers the fascinating Bisie tin project in the DRC’s North Kivu Province, which is being developed by Alphamin Resources Corp. The project, which will exploit the richest – by far – undeveloped tin deposit in the world, is well into the construction phase although erection of the plant will only start next year. The new mine will be an underground operation and will produce nearly 10 000 tonnes of copper a year. The capex involved is US$135 million.

Venetia 2Diamonds are covered in an article on the US$2,1 billion Venetia Underground Project (VUP), which will extend the life of Venetia into the 2040s. The VUP is now at an advanced stage with the sinking of the two vertical shafts the project requires having reached the half-way point and with the contractors on the decline having achieved 2,5 km of linear advance.

Gold projects featured in this issue are Pan African’s Elikhulu tailings retreatment project at Evander Mines, which will recover gold from three tailings facilities and add an average of 50 000 ounces a year to Pan African’s production, and Teranga’s Banfora gold project in Burkina Faso. Teranga has just completed a positive Feasibility Study on Banfora, which it plans to develop as an open-pit/CIL operation producing an average of 119 koz a year over an initial nine-year mine life.
