MM April 2018 Front coverMining is as much about getting discontinued mining operations back into production as it is about bringing new mines on stream. One company that is working towards restoring operations at a past-producing mine and bringing it to its full potential is Cradle Arc, which is the majority shareholder and operator of the Mowana copper mine in Botswana. Modern Mining recently spoke to Kevin van Wouw, CEO of the company, and Mark Jones, COO, to learn more about their plans for the mine, which is currently Botswana’s only copper producer.

Volvo Construction Equipment rigid haulersIn the field of equipment, we look at a major development from Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) – the introduction by the company – represented in Southern Africa by Babcock – of its own Volvo-branded range of rigid haulers. Interestingly, the flagship machine of the range, the R100E, has been extensively trialled at a South African opencast coal mine, where it has reportedly acquitted itself well.

Endeavour delivers record gold production in 2017

With its results boosted by the commissioning of the new Houndé mine in Burkina Faso, TSX-listed Endeavour Mining’s gold production from its portfolio of mines in the West African region increased to a record 663 koz in 2017, a 12 % increase over the prior year. Cradle Arc ready to move into high gear at Mowana

Cradle Arc is in the process of implementing an Accelerated Development Plan (ADP) at its Mowana copper mine in Botswana designed to allow the mine to reach steady-state production and positive cash flows more rapidly. The company is also expecting to make a decision soon on the installation of a DMS pre-concentration circuit, which would effectively more than double the present plant capacity of 1,2 Mt/a. Volvo unveils its rigid haulers
