Modern Mining August 2018In this issue we cover a wide spread of different metals and minerals, including diamonds, chrome (or more properly chromite) and gold.

Our coverage of diamond mining focuses on the activities of alluvial diamond miner, Steyn Diamante, in the Northern Cape while our article on chrome mining looks at the extensive alluvial operations of African Chrome Fields in the midlands of Zimbabwe. Gold is covered in a report on the new R1,7 billion Elikhulu Tailings Retreatment Plant at Pan African’s Evander property in Mpumalanga.

Comment – De Beers moves elephants in major conservation initiative

De Beers, in partnership with the Peace Parks Foundation, is relocating 200 elephants from its Venetia Limpopo Nature Reserve (VLNR) in Limpopo Province to the Zinave National Park in central Mozambique. New estimate lifts Kipushi’s zinc resource by 16 %

An independently prepared Mineral Resource Estimate (MRE) has resulted in a significant increase in measured and indicated mineral resources at Ivanhoe’s Kipushi zinc-copper-silver-germanium mine in the DRC. The updated MRE will be used in the preparation of the Kipushi Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS), which is expected to be finalised later this year or early in 2019. Read more …

Volvo machines adds muscle to Steyn Diamante’s fleet

Alluvial diamond miner Steyn Diamante has bolstered its mining fleet over the past year with several ‘new generation’ high-end machines from Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE), including an L350H wheel loader, the flagship of Volvo’s loader line-up, and three Volvo A60H articulated haulers. Mmamabula coal project ready to enter construction

Maatla Energy is poised to start construction of its Mmamabula coal mine in Botswana’s Mmamabula coalfield, which is the western extension of South Africa’s Waterberg coalfield.
