Sparks Electrical News January 20182018: THE YEAR OF THE SMART CONNECTION

Substantial changes have been predicted for those working in the electrical industry in the years ahead. While robotic assistants that can talk to us are still some way from becoming a reality, 2018 will see further technological advances that will profoundly impact the role of the electrical contractor. However, as the industry expands and creates new challenges for contractors, the demand for electricians will keep growing.

New technologies, new techniques and new demands from customers will continue to shake things up, and with the field becoming more diversified, it will bring opportunities for those contractors who stay abreast of the changes. An annual ‘State of the Industry’ survey conducted by Klein Tools shows that electricians in the US are in high demand and not concerned about automation affecting electrical construction jobs.

PERSONALITY OF THE MONTH

Willie Harmse, the owner of Pretoria based Megalight, is a hands-on leader who motivates his staff by working alongside them and leading by example. For Willie, there is never a dull moment in his working life and he has instilled this passion for the industry in his staff: each day brings challenges rather than problems and working through them brings you that much closer to realising your dreams. He does admit, however, that if he were to ‘do it over again’ he would work smarter rather than harder. Contrary to many people in South Africa at the moment, Willie believes that the future is bright and that the demand for electricians will grow both, in our industry directly, and in specialised fields. To take advantage of the opportunities that will come their way, he cautions youngsters to keep their heads up and stay abreast of ever-changing technology.

ELECTROBASE RECOGNISES TOP SUPPLIERS FOR 2017

Electrobase held its 18th annual Supplier of the Year awards dinner on Friday 10 November at Emperors Palace. The prestigious event was attended by wholesalers and suppliers from around South Africa, who took the opportunity to network, catch up with industry news and have some fun. Donne van Eeden, CEO of Electrobase and Enerji Electrical, congratulated the suppliers on their awards, and made special mention of Major Tech, which celebrated its 25th anniversary earlier this year, and which received the award for overall Supplier of the Year.

Silver Awards went to Eurolux, Kwikot-Electrolux and LEDVANCE while Gold Awards went to Brightstar Lighting, Crabtree, Enerji Electrical, Hellermann Tyton, Major Tech, Radiant, Stone Stamcor and Waco. Crabtree was also awarded the ‘Most Improved Supplier’ award.

EARTHING, LIGHTNING AND SURGE PROTECTION

For those living in the Gauteng region, this feature has special relevance during our summer rainy season when we can expect lightning strikes to damage sensitive equipment and cause data loss on computers, servers and storage devices. In light of this, it is very heartening indeed to read of all that ELPA, the Earthing and Lightning Protection Association, has achieved in the short six months of its existence.

BUYERS’ GUIDE

The January buyers’ guide lists manufacturers and distributors of products and services that cover Earthing, Lightning and Surge Protection, including earthing systems, surge protection devices, power supply filtering, mains protection and conductors.
