Sparks Electrical News February 2018Women in Energy

The 2018 Women in Energy Conference will take place on the 19th of February at the Sandton Convention Centre. The aim of the conference, the fourth event of its kind, is to increase leadership and the development of women in the African energy space. The conference offers an interactive hub that enables leading women within the energy sector to network, share knowledge and achievements, and encourage the further advancement of women across all sectors of the energy industry.

According to the Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI), there is a gender gap in leadership as women make up only 5% of board executives across the global power and utilities sector. Women’s leadership is essential for the task of building a sustainable energy future, and by not honing the essential skills of women worldwide, the energy sector is profoundly lacking in essential perspectives and innovation.

Personality of the Month

Theo Mashego was relatively new to the electrical industry when he became managing director of Unidrive Electric Motors, but that did not stop him from diving straight in, re-examining the company’s product and service offering, and turning the business from a precarious into a profitable one. A naturally positive person, Theo loves working with people and encouraging them to strive for excellence. He believes electrical contractors form part of a key trade and encourages youngsters to train as electricians, not only because of their value to the economy but because the skill is one they can always use, even if they are not employed in the formal sector. Theo thrives on hard work and takes care of his staff so that they, in turn, give quality service to customers.

Column

Eliminate the obvious and what remains is the truth

Sherlock Holmes (the fictional private detective) famously said, “When you have eliminated the impossible whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth”. In his column, Terry Mackenzie Hoy tells us how, with a production manager and a general manager breathing down your neck, you find the fault in a control or distribution board when you do not have the drawing. Or you do, but that drawing is out of date. To start with, you ask said managers to move away. You then get a stool, good light, roll down your sleeves and start at the beginning ...

Circuit breakers: designed to protect electrical circuits from damage

The basic function of the circuit breaker is to identify a fault and then interrupt the flow of current. All circuit breakers have common features, but specifications vary substantially depending on the voltage class, current rating and type of circuit breaker. In this article, Rhodam Evans of Major Tech explains what a low voltage thermal magnetic circuit breaker is and when it would be used.
