Sparks Electrical News July 2018

Despite founder Pierre Northard’s recent retirement, SAFEhouse, an association of organisations within the South African electrical industry, will continue to focus on long-term growth and a stronger working relationship with the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS). The association was formed in 2012 to combat the prevalence of unsafe products and services in South Africa by informing buyers and others  who influence buying decisions of the criteria by which to assess these products and services, and by exposing specific cases of sub-standard  products and practices. The two people tasked with taking the organisation forward are Connie Jonker and Barry O’Leary.

Personality of the Month

National Sales Manager for Aberdare Cables, Kern O’Reilly, has spent 21 years in the industry, gaining experience across many roles in the company. With a passion for interacting with and developing people, his experience and positive outlook are key to the company in today’s competitive electrical cables industry.

Column: Simple common sense

This month Terry Mackenzie Hoy recounts a recent interaction with one of his engineers to encourage the industry to try fix the something that breaks before throwing it away. Throwing things away should be the last resort, not the first. Although, fixing things can be a time consuming exercise, it is always a good idea to see if there is an obvious problem which can be fixed. A bit of logic helps, too. If something stops working, ask, why now? Look for the basics.

Lighting trend show this August

iSA Lighting Trend Show will be gathering the best Chinese lighting manufacturers to showcase their wares and network with the South African lighting industry this August. Taking place at the Sandton Convention Centre on August 16 and 17, from 10 am to 5 pm, the show, spread over 4 000 sqm with over 150 exhibitors, will focus on decorative lighting, LED lamps, outdoor lighting and solar lighting.
