Italian lighting designer iGuzzini has unveiled its latest illumination development: Light Shed Linen. “This product is made from nature, to connect us with Nature,” says Bodil Sonesson, the CEO of iGuzzini’s Swedish parent company, Fagerhult. “This product is a high energy-efficiency luminaire with the body made from bio-material linen, meaning a renewable source.”
The products make use of flax-based linen. “Flax, as all other plants, absorb CO2. To grow, flax needs only rainwater, and no artificial irrigation. Flax is sturdy; therefore it needs no pesticides to protect it or fertilisers to help it grow. Therefore, our flax crops are also preserving soil and groundwater. And one of the most important benefits of using flax in our Light Shed Linen range is that it is light as a feather,” adds the CEO. Using flax has other benefits for the lighting company – it reduces the carbon footprint, as well as the water footprint. “Sustainability is a principle that we take seriously. We have one planet, and we need to take care of it. By utilising plant-based linen in this product, we believe that we could be starting a shift in mindset,” adds the CEO.
The brand partnered with Italy’s University of Camerino, making use of their Chemistry Interdisciplinary Project, and MARLIC (the Marches Applied Research Laboratory for Innovative Composites), an Italian collaborative platform that focuses on sustainable manufacturing, eco-sustainability and the processing of new materials.
“Linen connects us with feelings linked to Nature, the simple things in life like slowness and the value of ancient, timeless knowhow. Linen is refined, light, pure and natural, which is why we chose this technology for our products,” says Sonesson. “We have built a sensor into the Light Shed Linen luminaire that activates only when natural light needs replacing, and artificial light meets that demand. The light being produced is equally good, variable, comfortable, pleasant and most importantly, sustainable.”
