Hitachi ABB Power Grids has pioneered a ground-breaking modular mobile substation solution which significantly reduces the time to restore power when major disruptive events, such as natural disasters, occur.

Claimed as a world-first, the 400 kV multi-voltage modular mobile substation system can be rapidly deployed and installed to restore power in just seven days – as opposed to the average duration of 18 months required for new build of a conventional substation. Each mobile substation, equipped with high-voltage hybrid switchgear and protection and control solutions, is compact in design and ready to be energised fast. Described as a plug-and-play solution it supports Hitachi ABB Power Grids’ aim to ensure access to affordable, reliable and sustainable energy.

Modular mobile substations provide for fast restoration of power.

Niklas Persson, Managing Director of the Grid Integration Business Unit at Hitachi ABB Power Grids said, “Wherever you are in the world, access to an affordable, reliable and sustainable source of power is a basic prerequisite for human society and progress. Disruptions to energy provision can have severe consequences. This is why we are continually innovating technologies, such as this modular mobile substation disaster recovery solution, to enable customers to provide stable and competitive sources of power – and reduce carbon emissions.”

The mobile substation was conceptualised to ensure long-term grid stability and power quality to regions particularly prone to unpredictable events and natural disasters such as storms, flooding and earthquakes. Hitachi ABB Power Grids designs and builds the modular solution and provides ongoing preventive maintenance to ensure the equipment is ready 24/7 to replace an existing substation in a short timeframe.

The modular concept is highly configurable so the mobile substations can be supplied to meet each customer’s specific needs – they can be configured to match the required voltage range and standards of the grid. Each factory-tested substation unit can be installed and deployed within hours, providing a solution for utilities and industries when they need to provide interim grid connections and temporary power supplies quickly.

The mobile substations do not require civil works and with reduced site activities, they pose lower risks. They are supplied as ready-to-connect complete assemblies, designed for grid code compliance and easy mobility. They are also environmentally friendly in terms of limited space requirements and easy transport from warehouse to site on trailers that are part of the modular mobile substation system.
